Aset Iskakov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board for Economics and Finance of CCGT Turkistan LLP, presented the 1,000 MW combined-cycle power plant project in the Turkistan Region during the session "Generation of the Future: What Should Kazakhstan's Energy Mix Look Like?" The forum is being held as part of Powerexpo Almaty 2026.
The combined-cycle power plant is designed to help reduce the power deficit in southern Kazakhstan. The combined electricity capacity requirement of the Turkistan Region and Shymkent is approximately 1,000 MW, while local generation capacity is around 120 MW.
"The main objective of our project is to meet the region's growing demand for power capacity. One of the plant's key advantages will be its high operational flexibility, enabling it to respond quickly to changes in electricity demand and compensate for fluctuations in renewable energy generation," he emphasized.
The plant will use combined-cycle technology: gas turbines will generate electricity, while heat from their exhaust gases will be used to produce steam for the steam turbines.
To date, the external gas supply infrastructure, drilling of water supply wells, and construction of the access road have been completed. Installation of the 220 kV and 500 kV power transmission lines is nearing completion. Preparations for commissioning are underway.
Following the power plant's commissioning, approximately 600 jobs are expected to be created. Plans also include establishing a training center for energy professionals at CCGT Turkistan in cooperation with Siemens Energy and KEPCO.
During the session, experts also discussed the development of gas-fired, coal-fired and renewable power generation through 2050, along with grid development and investment.
